Portland High School senior Mireille Tona has been selected as the 2021 Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs Portland Clubhouse. The recognition celebrates Mireille’s exceptional achievements as a Club member and also puts her in the running to be Maine State Youth of the Year – and to potentially compete for the regional and national titles.

“We are very excited to have Mireille represent our clubhouse at the state level (and hopefully beyond)!,” said Erin Giwer, program director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine’s Portland Clubhouse. “Mireille is a standout in our club community. There is a lot that goes into this competition – essays, interviews, speeches etc. – on top of everything else going on during senior year, and she has done it all with ease and a smile!”

At Portland High School, Mireille is an outstanding member of the girls’ basketball team. She has been a member of the Portland Boys & Girls Club for seven years. She plans to attend Wheaton College to pursue a career as a physical therapist. Her personal quote is: “Over the course of my time as a Club member, I participated in a ton of events and programs, and before I knew it, leadership became part of my identity.”

Mireille will be vying for the title of Maine State Youth of the Year on May 6. If she wins at the state level, she will go to the regional competition, and if she wins at regionals, she will compete for the National Youth of the Year title.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club members. Each year, one exceptional young person from a Boys & Girls Club rises to the role of National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year serves as both an exemplary ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth and as a strong voice for all of our nation’s young people.

Eight outstanding Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine members participated in the 2021 Youth of the Year selection process. The process involved being nominated by their Club staff team, completing an application, writing essays on My Club Experience, What Matters to Me, and Overcoming Obstacles. Candidates were interviewed by a selection panel of judges.
