More than 35 Portland Public Schools retiring employees were honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and the district in a virtual ceremony June 1.

“Let me begin by saying that there is no way for us to be able to express our gratitude to all of our retirees,” Superintendent Xavier Botana said. “Collectively, they have given approximately 1,000 years of dedicated service to the Portland Public Schools. That’s amazing!”

Those honored included longtime teachers, ed techs, secretaries, a social worker, a community partnership developer, custodians, a maintenance worker, nurses and a school psychologist.

“Whatever your role,” Botana told the retirees, “you have all worked to make a difference in the lives of our students – easily more than 100,000 students over time – and we can’t thank you enough.”

He noted that, due to COVID-19 precautions, the retirement celebration was a virtual one for the second year in a row. “While our setting is virtual, let’s be clear that our sentiments are very real,” Botana said. “The hugs, smiles and other expressions of love and gratitude may be different, but no less heartfelt.”

He added, “This is always a bittersweet event as we combine our gratitude for your years of contributions with the realization that as you leave, we are losing a wealth of knowledge, expertise and commitment. As everyone here knows, 80 percent of our budget goes to salaries and benefits for our staff.  Sometimes we hear people wonder about that high ratio. But for those of us who work in schools, we know that this is because we are ultimately a People business. Without the greatest team of people, we wouldn’t be able to do any of what we do. Our Portland Promise recognizes that People are our greatest resource.  And this group is evidence of that.”

The retirees’ length of service ranged from seven years to 49 years. Some of the group are retiring this month, some retired earlier this school year and a few will continue with the district a few more months before leaving. The ceremony was an opportunity to formally recognize our retirees as a group.

Here’s a YouTube video of the June 1 retirement ceremony, where you can learn more about each retiree’s career at PPS.
