Three Portland Public Schools teachers, Drew Pisani, Kathryn Toppan, and Ann Young, have renewed their certification as National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT). Pisani and Toppan teach English at Deering High School and Young is a math teacher at King Middle School.

The Portland Public Schools supports and encourages teachers to achieve “best practice” in teaching.  The district believes that one of the most rigorous and relevant ways to improve teaching practices – which ultimately improves student outcomes – is through teachers attaining their National Board Teacher Certification (NBTC) in the content area of their expertise. NBTC is considered the gold standard in teacher certification.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards celebrates the three PPS teachers, who are among 4,446 teachers across the United States to have recently achieved renewal status. Pisani, Toppan and Young are among 14 National Board Certified Teachers who are currently members of the Portland Public Schools staff.

“National Board Certified Teachers have proven that they teach to the highest standards in the profession – and, ten years later, they have put in the work to show their commitment to their practice and to their students. Research makes clear that their students are the true beneficiaries,” said Peggy Brookins, NBCT and President and CEO of the National Board.

The National Board works across the country, helping set the expectation that all teachers should demonstrate accomplished teaching via National Board certification and become leaders in their schools and communities. The Board believes every student should have the opportunity to learn from an accomplished teacher. Currently, more than 20,000 teachers nationwide are pursuing Board certification.

About the NBPTS: The founding mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (www.nbpts.org) is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards; and advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers.
