Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana issued the following statement in response to the results of the June 11 referendum question validating the Portland Public Schools’ $117.4 million budget for fiscal year 2020:

“Thank you, Portland voters, for once again demonstrating that this is a community that believes in the importance and value of public education by approving our school budget for the 2019-2020 school year. This budget is a responsible one approved by both the Portland Board of Public Education and the City Council. It preserves  current staffing and programming and also allows us to implement key improvements, such as expanded pre-kindergarten classes and a well-resourced behavioral health continuum. Thanks to the Portland community’s consistent support for our schools, we can now move forward and focus on the important work of preparing for the coming school year.”

According to official results from the office of Portland City Clerk provided on June 12, the vote to validate the budget was 1,746, or 72 percent, in favor and 691, or 28 percent, opposed, a margin of more than 2 to 1.
