The city’s new Hall Elementary School building is on track to open this coming fall. Before that happens, community input is being sought on whether to continue to use the school’s existing name or consider some potential new names for the building. March 20 is the deadline to fill out the online Naming Hall School Building Public Input Form.

That form asks whether the school should continue to be named Fred P. Hall Elementary School or whether the name should be changed and if so, what names should be considered.

Fred P. Hall was a Portland administrator and teacher who taught at Deering High School and headed its history department. Hall School was originally named Glenwood Square School and then renamed for Hall after his death.

Appropriate new names for a school must meet one or more of the criteria determined by Portland Board of Public Education policy. A school name must:

A. Preserve or honor history;

B. Be place specific (such as street, neighborhood, or town names);

C. Recognize landmarks or geographic locations in proximity to the school;

D. Honor a person who has made an outstanding contribution to teaching and learning or given distinguished service to the Portland Public Schools; and/or

E. Honor a person who has made a significant social contribution at the local, state, national or global level.

School board District 3 Representative Laurie Davis, who is co-chair of the Hall School Building Committee, stressed that the final decision on the name of the new school rests with the school board but that public input is an important part of the process.

The Review Panel for naming the new Hall Elementary School building will hold a community meeting at the existing Hall School to gather input. That meeting will be on Wednesday, March 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The panel also has scheduled a public hearing at Hall School on March 21 at 6:30 p.m. After the public hearing that night, the Review Panel will consider all the input and come up with a recommendation to the school board.

The school board is expected to hold a public hearing on the naming issue on April 12 and then vote on a name on April 24.

The original Fred P. Hall Elementary School, located at 23 Orono Road, was built in 1956. To replace that deteriorating building, Portland voters in 2016 approved the construction of a $29.7 million new school on the same site, with most of the cost covered by the state.
