Ten Reiche Community School teachers are planning a “Jump for Courage!” polar plunge on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at East End Beach. They will be running into frigid Casco Bay to demonstrate to students that you can do difficult things even when you are afraid.

The teachers also have used the planned polar plunge as a way to raise funds to buy a book for each Reiche student that has a theme of perseverance and/or overcoming obstacles to reach a goal. In addition, they have been using the plunge as an opportunity to integrate discourse about facing fears and being courageous into their instruction and class meetings.

To highlight their effort, the teachers will wear Reiche sweatshirts and identical masks with a life preserver pattern to school on Thursday, Jan. 28, and Friday, Jan. 29, to help identify those who will be taking the plunge and generate excitement.

Teachers have been practicing for the bracing event. Some teachers, including event organizers Joy Goddard and Kristen Fox, had a "wet run" Nov. 27 at Willard Beach in South Portland. Fox said she and her husband also “have been plunging at Kettle Cove every Sunday to prepare for this—it feels great!”
