Nancy Sirois, a math coach/interventionist at Riverton Elementary School, is one of about just 24 teachers from around the world to study math teacher professional development and math instruction in Japan this summer.

Sirois will be participating in Project IMPULS (International Math-teacher Professionalization Using Lesson Study) at Tokyo Gakugei University. That’s a

a lesson study immersion program designed to give math educators an opportunity to learn about Japanese Lesson Study. Sirois and the other teachers from around the world are spending two weeks, from June 14-28, working with Japanese professors, teachers and students in local schools. They’ll be learning about improving mathematical teacher professional development and working collaboratively to plan, implement, observe and discuss math instruction.

“There is a lot of work involved but I'm so excited that I get to participate,” Sirois said. “My hope is to return to Riverton and, during the course of the year, implement some of what I've learned so that we can collaborate together with other Riverton teachers to set goals, design lessons incorporating problem-solving and accountable talk, observe each other teach and then reflect on student learning so we can move forward in our teaching.”
