A group of fifth-grade students at Rowe Elementary School recently received a $499.29 check from Painting for a Purpose that will fund supplies for their innovative project, Learning through Movement.

Assisted by physical education teacher Rene Custeau, the fifth-graders are creating movement activities for kindergarten students during their physical education classes that focus on helping their kindergarten "buddies" develop literacy and math skills.

Painting for a Purpose celebrates the power of art to bring people together and the power of young people to improve their schools and communities. PFP does this by holding an annual art auction to raise funds, which are then used to encourage the civic engagement of young people and supporting them in putting their good ideas into action.

PFP offers grants of up to $500 to K-12 students in the Portland Public Schools. All grants must be youth-led service learning grants and written by students.
