Deering High School’s Debate Team recently was honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for a string of successes. The recognition took place at the Board’s Jan. 7 meeting.

Botana said, “Today, we begin by recognizing the Deering High School Debate Team, led by team coach and Deering mathematics teacher Brian Dodge.”

He noted that the debate team “is not a stranger to recognition by this Board for their successes.  The team has distinguished itself in tournament after tournament, including taking home three individual state championships over the past six years and competing at the national level last year.”

The team this year swept the Falmouth Speech and Debate tournament on Nov. 9, competing in Public Forum and Lincoln/Douglas-Style Debate. In that competition, the teams of seniors Glynis O’Meara and Aidan Reid; junior Aidan Blum-Levine and sophomore Linh Nguyen; and sophomores Balqies Mohamed and Emily Cheung finished first, second and third respectively.

The team continued its successful run with wins at the Maine Forensic Association (MFA) event on Saturday, Nov. 23. Deering teams, including one with Glynis O’Meara and Aidan Reid; another with Aidan Blum-Levine and Linh Nguyen; and a the team with Balqies Mohamed and Emily Cheung, competed in the Public Forum category and took home trophies for first, third and fourth respectively. The team took second place overall for the tournament.

Then, on Dec. 7, at an MFA event at Poland Regional High School. Deering's individual team of Glynis O'meara and Aidan Reid finished first for the third tournament in a row.

Present for the Board recognition ceremony were Linh Nguyen, Aidan Reid, Aidan Blum-Levine, Balqies Mohamed, Emily Cheung and Coach Dodge.

“Congratulations to the Deering High School Debate Team for continuing its exemplary run of victories and making us all proud,” Botana said.
