The Portland Board of Public Education held a ceremony on Monday, Dec. 4, to inaugurate its newest members. The board also selected Anna Trevorrow to continue to be board chair for the coming year.

Sworn in at the ceremony at City Hall was one board member who was re-elected in the Nov. 7 election: District 5 Representative Marnie Morrione, who will be serving her fourth term. Also inaugurated were two board newcomers: Timothy Atkinson, who won the District 4 seat; and Mark Balfantz, who won an at-large school board seat. School board members’ terms run for three years.

Also sworn in was a student representative to the board: Isabel Clayter, representing Portland High School. Two other student representatives, Tiana Urey, representing Casco Bay High School and Saharla Farah, representing Deering High School, were unable to attend the Dec. 4 ceremony and are expected to be sworn in Dec. 19. A student representative for the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) has yet to be announced.

Trevorrow, an at-large representative to the board, has served as board chair since last December. The board voted unanimously on Monday to have her continue in that role.
