The community is invited to a school garden tour on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., hosted by the Portland Public Schools’ School Garden Network. The tour will give the public the opportunity to learn how these living classrooms benefit students and the community.

Four unique school gardens are featured, at East End and Rowe elementary schools, at Lincoln Middle School and at the Portland Arts & Technology High School or PATHS. Attendees will discover the stories behind these gardens, learn how they help create healthier kids and communities, and harvest ingredients for a school garden pizza celebration at the end!

Tour times are as follows: East End, 1 p.m.; Rowe, 2 p.m.; LMS, 3 p.m.; and the PATHS garden tour, pizza party and community mingling time at 4 p.m. Attendees transport themselves on this "caravan" tour, but ride share options are available for those who wish to meet at the first school and carpool.

Any and all community members are invited  – including students, staff, families, school and city officials, other community members and anyone who wants to get involved or just really loves school gardens and want to see what is happening with them at PPS!

The PPS School Garden Network brings together those involved in school gardens throughout the district to meet, collaborate, and strategize to make school garden initiatives stronger and more sustainable in Portland. For more information, visit the PPS School Garden Network on Facebook.

The tour is sponsored by the Portland Public Schools, Cultivating Community, the Maine School Garden Network and Food Fuels Learning.
