Students at Lyseth Elementary School and Portland High School recently won Painting for a Purpose grants for projects that promote civic engagement.

Lyseth second-graders and their teacher, Linda Whittum, received a $500 grant to support their pen pal project with the senior citizens residing at Foreside Harbor, an assisted living facility.

Students have been writing letters and sending monthly crafts to the seniors. The grant to their Foreside Harbor Pen Pals project will enable the students to meet their senior pals and do a singalong with them.

Painting for a Purpose also awarded $230 to Portland High School’s Grupo Latinx for a photo project documenting how life has changed for group members since their arrival in the United States. Grupo Latinx is a group for Spanish-speaking immigrant students at Portland High School.

The students will display photos from the past and the present in hopes that this will show the community who they are and encourage others to welcome new students. The exhibit will be displayed at the Portland Public Schools Multilingual & Multicultural Center.

Painting for a Purpose celebrates the power of art to bring people together and the power of young people to improve their schools and communities. PFP does this by holding an annual art auction to raise funds, which are then used to encourage the civic engagement of young people and supporting them in putting their good ideas into action.

PFP offers grants of up to $500 to K-12 students in the Portland Public Schools. All grants must be youth-led service learning grants and written by students.
