Deering High School teacher Jen Lunt and Longfellow Elementary School teacher Megan Markgren recently were honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for achieving National Board Teacher Certification.

Botana commended the two teachers as “outstanding” at the Board’s March 5 meeting. He said they join 13 other Portland Public Schools teachers who also have attained such certification.

Botana explained that the Portland Public Schools supports and encourages teachers to achieve “best practice” in teaching.  One of the most rigorous and relevant ways to improve teaching practices – which ultimately improves student outcomes – is through the district’s support of teachers attaining their National Board Teacher Certification (NBTC) in the content area of their expertise, Botana said. NBTC is considered the gold standard in teacher certification. He noted that attaining the certification is a rigorous, multi-year process.

Lunt is an ELL teacher at Deering and one of the classes she teaches is an “Interpretation as a Career” class, which encourages biliteracy. Markgren teaches in a grade 3 and grade 4 looping program at Longfellow.

“We’re incredibly proud of the work you do everyday,” Botana told the teachers.

Board Certification allows teachers to hone their practice, showcase their talent in the classroom and demonstrate their dedication to their students and their profession. A decade of research shows that students of board-certified teachers learn more than their peers without board-certified teachers, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, an independent, nonprofit organization that administers the certification program and is working to advance accomplished teaching for all students. Studies have also found that the positive impact of having a board-certified teacher is even greater for minority and low-income students, according to that organization.

The People goal in the Portland Promise, the district’s strategic plan, calls for the Portland Public Schools to attract and retain a talented and diverse staff and ensure that staff members have the skills and support that they need to realize expectations.
