Stephen Schwartz, the United States’ first ambassador to the African nation of Somalia in 25 years, will visit Maine this week, and Deering High School (DHS) will be one of the ambassador’s stops.

Schwartz is conducting a nationwide tour, visiting cities such as Lewiston that have Somali communities. He’ll also be at DHS on Wednesday, April 5, to talk to students in a student-moderated question-and-answer session.

The session will run from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the DHS auditorium.

As a member of the International Studies School Network (ISSN), DHS offers opportunities and curriculum to help students investigate the world, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas and take action.

According to the State Department, Schwartz became the thirteenth U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Somalia in June 2016. He has been a career Foreign Service Officer since 1992 and has performed political, economic, consular, and management work in overseas assignments in a wide variety of countries.

Prior to joining the State Department, Mr. Schwartz worked at a non-governmental organization supporting transition in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union and in the Africa Program at the Brookings Institution.

In the early 1980s, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon and Peace Corps Desk Officer for Mauritania, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Born and raised in Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. Schwartz speaks French and Spanish.
