Students, staff and community members are invited to “eat your words” at Riverton Elementary School on Thursday, April 6, as the school collaborates with the Portland Public Library to put on the yearly Edible Book Festival.

The Edible Book Festival will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of the school, located at 1600 Forest Avenue. The festival is a fun gathering to celebrate books, literature and food culture. Held each year around April Fool’s Day, it’s celebrated around the world.

Participants create edible masterpieces inspired by their favorite book, a pun on a famous book title or simply just make a cake in the shape of a book. Entries can be made out of anything edible (not just baked goods) and participants are encouraged to “think outside the box.”

At Riverton, many teachers are making cakes that tie into books that the students have read. Students from the pre-kindergarten level on up are joining in the fun, thinking of the best ways to portray their favorite reading material with food.

At the festival, the Edible Books will be displayed and voted on. After the judging concludes and prizes are awarded, everyone gets to dig in!

Don’t like to cook? Spectators are welcome too! The event is free of charge for participants and spectators.

There’s still time for students, staff and the general public to register to submit an “Edible Book” entry. This year, the Edible Books will be judged in the following categories:

• Elementary

• Middle & High school

• Group [includes groups of 2+, clubs and kid/parent teams]

• Adult

• Food & Beverage Professional

• People’s Choice
