Multilingual Center Wins $25,200 in Grants for Make It Happen!
Posted on 12/30/2014

The Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center recently won four grants totaling $25,200 to support its Make It Happen! program.

Make It Happen! is a program that pairs English language learners in grades 8-12 with volunteer academic coaches to provide personalized, structured academic and social support. Coaches work with students from countries all over the globe, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, China, Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Mexico, Serbia, Somalia, Sudan, and Vietnam.

All the grants were awarded this December. Three of the awards were made by the Maine Community Foundation: a $7,500 Rines/Thompson grant; a $7,500 Frances Hollis Brain grant; and a $7,200 Edward H. Daveis grant. The fourth grant was a $3,000 award from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust.

The Maine Community Foundation, which has offices in Ellsworth and Portland, works with donors and other partners to improve the quality of life for all Mainers.

The Rines/Thompson Fund grant was made from the Undapassawana Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, and will assure the sustainability of the Make It Happen! program in the coming year.

The Frances Hollis Brain Foundation grant will also benefit Make It Happen!. The foundation is a charitable family foundation whose mission is to support nonprofit organizations and projects that alleviate human suffering and improve the human condition.

The Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund, which is a part of the Maine Community Foundation, focuses its grants on Greater Portland organizations that work with young children, their families and teachers, and on youth leadership programs for students through high school.

The grant money from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust will be used to support the living allowances of the Make It Happen! AmeriCorps site coordinators. The Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust was established to benefit nonprofit organizations located or operating in Maine.
