The Portland Public Schools today released the first edition of its
new Community e-Newsletter. The e-Newsletter is designed to better
inform parents and other community members about successes and
initiatives in the public schools and spur more engagement in education.
“One
of my core beliefs is that it takes an entire community to ensure the
success of our public schools. In order to engage in our schools, the
community needs to be informed. That is why the Portland Public Schools
is introducing our first ever Community e-Newsletter,” said Portland
Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk. “We hope that this newsletter
will help empower our community to participate in improving our schools
so that we can be the best small urban school district in the country by
2017.”
The purpose of the Community e-Newsletter is to
communicate successes and ongoing work at the district level and in the
public schools.
For example, this issue of the e-Newsletter
includes news items about the Portland Public Schools’ STEM (science,
technology, engineering and math) Exposition, an update about the plan
for replacing Hall School and information on student projects.
The
Community e-Newsletter will come out twice a year, in the fall and the
spring. Caulk encouraged school families and their friends and
neighbors, as well as other community members, to subscribe to the free
Community e-Newsletter by sending an email to [email protected]
with “Subscribe to e-Newsletter” in the message or subject line. The
Community e-Newsletter can also be found on the district’s website, www.portlandschools.org. Click on “District” and go to the “Stay Informed” section of the site.

One news item in the new e-Newsletter is about Lincoln Middle School students
attending a residential science program at the Ferry Beach Ecology School in Saco.
