School Board, Superintendent Recognize 2014 Retirees
Posted on 10/23/2014

Members of the Portland Board of Public Education and Portland Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk held a special ceremony at the board’s Oct. 21 meeting to recognize 12 Portland Public Schools’ employees who recently chose to retire.

Those retiring had a combined total of 296 years of service to the district, and included teachers, a nurse and Central Office staff.

Superintendent Caulk, Portland Public Schools Chief Academic Officer David Galin, and Board of Public Education Chair Sarah Thompson thanked the retirees for their years of dedicated service to students and the district.

Among those attending the ceremony was Bruce Koharian, the longest serving retiree of the group. He was a high school teacher in the district for 39 years, working at both Deering and Portland high schools. “I was given the opportunity to teach and I loved every minute of it,” Koharian told the school board.

Also personally thanked for her service was Mary Ellen O’Toole, a nurse at Portland High School for 27 years.

Mike Wilson, who retired as the district’s chief financial officer (CF0) after four years, also attended the ceremony.

Board Chair Thompson thanked him for his role in helping to instill public confidence in the district’s finances.

Wilson said, “I appreciate the opportunity to have served the Portland Public Schools.”

Other retirees were unable to attend the meeting. Their names and years of service include: Michael Bailey, 34 years: Joni Beliveau, 33 years; Mary Jo Keenan, 35 years; Deborah Keyes, 30 years; Thomas McGinty, 15 years; Carmine Rumo, 16 years; Denise Sucher-Wrinkler, 17 years, Janie Young, 31 years; and Shoshana Hoose, 15 years.
