| CBHS Seniors to (Literally) ‘Get on a Soapbox’ on May 1 Posted on 04/29/2015 Casco Bay High School seniors will hold a Soapbox Celebration of Free Speech on Friday, May 1, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Monument Square in Portland. They will be celebrating the right of Americans to speak freely by performing speeches and inviting passersby to take a turn on soapboxes the students themselves have built.

| New Committee to Advise on METRO Plan for High School Students Posted on 04/27/2015 A METRO Advisory Committee has been formed to provide feedback and suggestions and facilitate community outreach regarding the new plan to have Greater Portland METRO buses transport Portland Public Schools’ high school students to and from school and also to and from extracurricular activities, starting this fall.

 | PPS Students Celebrate Education with Sea Dogs Posted on 04/16/2015 April 15 was Education Day at Hadlock Field, with the Portland Sea Dogs moving up their start time so that students could attend a game. Maine students from as far away as Rumford and Farmington filled the stadium, and 800 Portland Public Schools students were among them.

| School Board Sets June 19 as Last Day of Classes Posted on 04/09/2015 At its Tuesday, April 7, business meeting, the Portland Board of Public Education voted to make up snow days this school year by adding four more days to the 2014-2015 calendar. The last day for students now is set for Friday, June 19, 2015 instead of Monday, June 15, assuming there are no more cancellations.

 | NFL Player Showcases Healthy Snacks at PHS Posted on 04/09/2015 The Maine Dairy and Nutrition Council has purchased a new vending machine for Portland High School – one that will provide students with healthy after-school snacks. And on April 3, to showcase the new vending machine, the council brought in an NFL player, Maine native and Tennessee Titans tight end Matthew Mulligan, to speak with students about how nutrition and physical activity have helped him to achieve.

| Revised Start/End Times for Elementary, Middle Schools Proposed Posted on 04/08/2015 The Portland Board of Public Education is considering a newly revised schedule of elementary and middle school start and end times for the 2015-2016 school year. The latest bell schedule, which was presented to the school board at a workshop on Tuesday, April 7, is designed to be responsive to a variety of feedback from the public and staff about previously proposed start/end times. That board will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 28, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School on the proposed changes.

| Board Adjusts School Start/End Times, Recommends FY16 budget Posted on 04/01/2015 The Portland Board of Public Education voted on Tuesday, March 31 to make some changes in school start and end times to accommodate 20 more minutes of student learning time that will be added to each school day, beginning this fall. The board also voted to recommend a $102,776,657 FY2016 school budget to the City Council.
