The Maine Dairy and Nutrition Council has purchased a new vending machine for Portland High School – one that will provide students with healthy after-school snacks. And on April 3, to showcase the new vending machine, the council brought in an NFL player, Maine native and Tennessee Titans tight end Matthew Mulligan, to speak with students about how nutrition and physical activity have helped him to achieve.

The vending machine at PHS is one of two vending machines that the Maine Dairy and Nutrition Council has provided to Maine schools as part of its commitment to nutrition and student health. The other vending machine is at Massabesic High School.

The council said both schools are active in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, which is a cooperative effort between the National Dairy Council and the NFL to teach students about eating right and the importance of being active for a minimum of 60 minutes each day.

PHS and Massabesic held events April 3 that brought students, school officials, partner organizations and the community together to kick off and showcase the new healthy vending machines that they will be using to fuel greatness in their schools.

Also present at the events was Kurt Messner, USDA Northeast Region Acting Administrator; USDA Regional Communications Director Mark Abueg; and School Breakfast Programs Education Specialist Jami Curley of the Maine Department of Education.

The events were a celebration of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Fuel Greatness campaign. Research has shown again and again that proper nutrition and physical activity can help children achieve more in the classroom.
