April 15 was Education Day at Hadlock Field, with the Portland Sea Dogs moving up their start time so that students could attend a game. Maine students from as far away as Rumford and Farmington filled the stadium, and 800 Portland Public Schools students were among them.

One PPS student, Jason Duarte, who attends the Bayside Learning Community, was thrilled to catch a game ball. And Portland Public Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk addressed the crowd.

Caulk made some remarks about Jackie Robinson. April 15 also happened to be Jackie Robinson Day, the 68th anniversary of the date in 1947 when Robinson broke the color barrier and became the first African American player in modern Major League Baseball history.

Caulk also noted it was National Assistant Principals Week, and used the opportunity to acknowledge the district’s assistant principals, whose important contributions to the smooth running of its schools ensure student success. The Sea Dogs did a recognition for Assistant Principals Week during the third inning of the game, which the Sea Dogs won.

Students from the following PPS schools attended the game: Casco  Bay High School; Lincoln Middle School, the Bayside Learning Community; and East End, Presumpscot and Riverton elementary schools.

Caulk thanked the Sea Dogs, particularly sales and promotions manager Courtney Rague, for coordinating the Education Day game and providing support to help schools attend. He also thanked Mercy Hospital for sponsoring tickets for the game.
