Also on Sept. 1, Longfellow Elementary School will welcome students with a barbecue.

 | New Bus Route Makes It Easier for PPS High School Students To Use METRO Posted on 08/19/2015 The Portland Public Schools is reminding high school students that they will be using METRO’s public transportation system this fall to get to and from school and extracurricular activities. They also will have the freedom to use METRO for jobs and recreation. PPS students’ Transit Pass allows free and unlimited use of METRO bus routes during the academic school year, including weekends and break periods.

 | Grant to Lead to Arts Integration in More Schools in 2015-2016 Posted on 08/11/2015 This past academic year, Side x Side, a Portland nonprofit whose mission is to integrate the arts into the curriculum of Maine public schools, successfully piloted five arts-integrated programs at Reiche Community School. During the 2015-2016 school year, those programs will expand to three more Portland Public Schools elementary schools: Ocean Avenue, East End and Riverton.

 | Book Drive Off to a Great Start, but More Donations Needed Posted on 08/10/2015 Portland Public Schools students will see some great new books on their school library shelves this fall, thanks to the generosity of customers at the Books-A-Million store in South Portland.That bookstore, part of a national chain, is devoting the month of August to a book drive to benefit the Portland Public Schools. All customers are being asked at checkout if they would like to help out by purchasing a book or two to donate to the district's school libraries.

 | Summer = Learning + Fun for Portland Students Posted on 08/06/2015 This summer, Portland Public Schools students have been engaged in such activities as creating an inflatable planetarium to learn about the stars, attending a Summer Research Adventure Camp to explore such topics as déjà vu and the possibility of life on other planets, and going geocaching – hunting for and finding a hidden object with the aid of GPS coordinates.They’re all part of the summer programs offered this year by the Portland Public Schools and partners as part of Portland’s new Feeding Bodies & Minds collaborative project.
