Portland Public Schools students will see some great new books on their school library shelves this fall, thanks to the generosity of customers at the Books-A-Million store in South Portland. That bookstore, part of a national chain, is devoting the month of August to a book drive to benefit the Portland Public Schools. All customers are being asked at checkout if they would like to help out by purchasing a book or two to donate to the district's school libraries.

Coreen Modisette, the district school librarian spearheading the Aug. 2-29 fundraiser, reported that the first week of the drive resulted in the donation of more than 375 books, worth a total of nearly $3,000.

“Let’s see what we can do to beat that next week!” Modisette urged. “The South Portland store is No. 1 for the first week of August, thanks to our wonderful and supportive Portland community, and the generosity of their customers – many of whom are Portland parents, teachers and students.”

The books customers are being asked to donate are displayed behind the cash registers at the store, located at 430 Gorham Road in South Portland's Maine Mall area. Donors have plenty of books to choose from – the district's school librarians provided wish lists of hundreds of books they'd like to add to school library shelves.

The Books-A-Million store will continue collecting books on the Portland Public Schools' behalf through Saturday, Aug. 29. If you're at the store, please ask about how you can help Portland's public schools!
