Students attending the JTG Summer Camp at Lyseth Elementary School this summer learned all about the weather while working on their literacy skills.

They celebrated the culmination of the program on Aug. 7 with lots of edible weather bite treats. Their families were invited to also enjoy the treats, have lunch, and see a slide show presentation that highlighted the many activities that campers participated in over the course of the five-week program.

Forty-three students, an exceptional group of educators and support staff, and many family members enjoyed a weather-themed lunch menu consisting of Kite Krispies; Blue Sky and Cloud Jell-O; “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” cupcakes; Rainbow Fruit Kebabs; and Cloud Floats (special thanks to Eli’s Root Beer)!

During the five weeks of the program, campers were able to work on literacy skills while investigating air and weather. Rising first, second and third graders visited the Portland International Jetport, Portland’s Eastern Prom and East End Beach.

They had a visit from Northern Sky Toyz, during which students learned how to make their own kites, and meteorologist Craig Miller from WGME-TV told them all about weather and weather instruments.

Lyseth extends its gratitude to the John T. Gorman Foundation for the funding and support of this literacy-based programming over the past three years.
