The Portland Board of Public Education this week unanimously voted to approve the appointment of Kathleen Bouchard as interim principal of King Middle School and of Caroline Roberge as an assistant principal at Deering High School.

The board’s action took place at its regular meeting on Aug. 18.

Bouchard has a long history with the Portland Public Schools and was an assistant principal at King until she retired in 2010. She is returning for a one-year appointment to lead King, a nationally renowned Expeditionary Learning school. Bouchard replaces Michael McCarthy, the longtime, transformative King principal who announced his retirement this summer.

“Kathy Bouchard served this district for decades with distinction,” said Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker, in introducing Bouchard to the school board. Now, Crocker said, Bouchard is “willing to come back and jump in and serve with greater distinction as interim principal … as we transition from one longtime leader to next steps at the school.”

Bouchard holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Southern Maine and a bachelor’s degree in art, with a minor in education, from Regis College in Massachusetts. She began her career with the Portland Public Schools as an art teacher in 1973. Her career included holding assistant principal posts at Portland High School and Lyman Moore Middle School and she was principal at Jack Elementary School during its temporary move downtown while a new school – today’s East End Community School – was built.

Bouchard told the school board that returning to the Portland Public Schools “is a great opportunity for me.” She said she’s excited that some of her staff members at King are former students at that school.

At Deering High School, Roberge will serve as an assistant principal on an administrative team that consists of Principal Ira Waltz and new Assistant Principal Abdullahi Ahmed, who was appointed to that post in June.

Roberge holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Phoenix and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Anna Maria College in Massachusetts.

For the past three years she has been an assistant principal at NHSAU64 - Nute Middle/High School in Milton, N.H. Prior to that, she was a math teacher at Noble middle and high schools in North Berwick for nearly a decade.

“We are very excited to have her with us at Deering High School,” Crocker told the board, in introducing Roberge.

In speaking to the board, Roberge said, “I’m thrilled to bring my commitment to excellence in education to Deering High School’ and said she plans to “work collaboratively to foster a student-centered learning environment” at the school.
