A group of Portland Public Schools’ high school students took a test ride of METRO’s new Route 9 this week and described riding METRO as easy and convenient.

Some of the students – Casco Bay High School students Matt Suslovic, Sophie VanDerburgh and Gustavo Febles – also narrated a video of their trip on the 9A bus. The video has been posted on the district’s YouTube site and can be viewed here. Both the 9A bus and 9B bus provide service to the district’s public high schools.

Starting in September, Portland Public Schools' high school students will be using Portland METRO buses to get to and from school and extracurricular activities. (Specialized school bus transportation will continue to be provided to high school students who need it.) The switch to METRO is part of some transportation changes resulting from the addition of 20 more minutes of student learning time being added to each school day in the 2015-2016 school year.

High school students also will have the freedom to use METRO for jobs and recreation – their METRO Student Transit Pass allows free and unlimited use of METRO bus routes during the academic school year, including weekends and break periods.

Sahra Ahmed, a Deering High School student, was one of the students who took the test ride on Aug. 26. “It’s so easy,” Sahra said after trying out the service.
