A new initiative to expand learning for youngsters and adults kicked off last week.

The initiative is called Maine State of Learning (MSOL) and is a project fueled by public and private partnerships across the state of Maine to provide more learning opportunities to Maine citizens of all ages – including Portland Public Schools’ students. The project also recognizes that learning through digital badges, and connects it to statewide proficiencies, career pathways and personal goals.

By highlighting learning and culture within regions around the state, surfacing free learning options online, and connecting those experiences into state guidelines and industries, every citizen in Maine, including underrepresented or at-risk populations, can benefit.

The MSOL initiative launched on June 25 with an initial pilot program begun this summer, from which MSOL will grow and expand.

Portland Public Schools’ students can go to the MSOL website at www.mainestateoflearning.org or click here to find out about all kinds of learning opportunities to explore this summer. Students can click on the Portland Public Schools button on the MSOL site to discover what learning badges they can earn through the public schools. Examples include a citizen hero badge and badges for enthusiastic communicators, inventive thinkers and passionate learners.
