Nine Portland Public Schools’ students are among 17 Maine middle and high school students slated to sail into Portland Harbor on July 18 in a tall ship flotilla.

Last month, the nonprofit tall ships association, Tall Ships America, presented scholarships to 17 Maine students to make it possible for them to spend from one to two weeks sailing on tall ships. Tall ships are large, traditionally-rigged sailing vessels, and the idea behind the scholarships, provided by a nonprofit organization called Sailing Ships Portland, is to promote education and character building through sail training on the ships.

Students applying for the scholarships had to write essays on why they wanted to sail on a tall ship. The scholarship winners will be aboard the tall ships Fritha, Picton Castle and Lynx when the vessels enter the harbor for the parade of sail that will launch the Tall Ships Portland 2015 festival, which runs July 18-20.

Scholarship winners from the Portland Public Schools included Casco Bay High School students Austin Cormier, Mazie Linsmith, Julien Peck, Naomi Radtke Rowe and Nathan Robinson. Three Deering High School students also won scholarships: Ray Nyarushatsi, Badar Omar and Annah Rossvall. King Middle School student Daisy Furber also won a scholarship.

To learn more about the festival and the scholarships and students’ reasons for wanting to sail on the tall ships, go to the blog on the Tall Ships Portland 2015 website, www.tallshipsportland.com.
