Michelle Amato, a gifted and talented teacher who works with students at Hall and Riverton elementary schools and Longfellow and Lincoln middle schools, has been selected by Harvard University to attend the Future Learning Institute of Harvard. She was chosen for that weeklong fellowship for the work she has been doing around global competence across the school district.

The Portland Board of Public Education and Portland School Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk recognized Amato at the board’s May 19 meeting.

Project Zero’s Future of Learning Institute features research, frameworks and tools that enable teachers to understand how learning is changing and to create informed and relevant innovations in response. As a participant, Amato will interact directly with leading scholars and colleagues from around the world to explore three forces shaping life and learning: a growing understanding of the mind/brain; the digital revolution; and globalization.

“Ultimately, as a result of the institute, she will increase her capacity to prepare learners to live informed, creative, ethical, and reflective lives in rapidly changing environments,” Caulk said. “We recognize Michelle tonight for being chosen as a participant in this important fellowship as she continues to work with students on global competency.”
