A team of Lyseth Elementary School teachers has been selected to attend the Project Zero Summer Institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in July.

Team members Nancy Smith, grade 5 teacher; Ellen Handelman, art teacher; Rachel Landry, resource room teacher; and Karen Stockmann, literacy specialist and grade 2 teacher, will take courses centered in four strands. The strands are: Teaching and Assessing for Understanding,  Making Thinking and Learning Visible,  Learning in and through the Arts and Examining Contemporary Contexts and Challenges.

Team members plan to use their learning to grow the work within the school and in the district. Lyseth Elementary School strives to empower all learners to grow socially, emotionally, and academically; to act compassionately; to think critically and creatively; and to become global citizens and lifelong learners.  The team’s work at the Institute will further this mission.

In addition to the week at the Summer Institute, Nancy Smith was selected as a fellow for the Future of Learning Institute at Harvard Graduate School of Education. In her third year at the Portland Public Schools, Smith has been part of the Global Competency Leadership Team, the Lyseth Leadership Team and has led three milestone-learning experiences for fifth-grade students to educate them for global competence.

Project Zero's Future of Learning Institute, to be held the last week in July, features research, frameworks and tools that enable participants to understand how learning is changing and to create informed and relevant innovations in response.  As a participant, Smith will interact directly with leading scholars and colleagues from around the world. She also looks forward to sharing this experience and her learning with her colleagues throughout the district.
