The Portland Board of Public Education earlier this spring recognized Reiche music teacher Alyson Ciechomski. She and the school’s kindergarten team have developed a partnership with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, called PSO Musical Explorers. The partnership has developed a program that uses music to accelerate learning across the curriculum.

Early in June, Ciechomski  and Norman Huynh, PSO Assistant Conductor, received the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award at the 2015 Symposium on Music in Schools.

“We are excited to have Alyson recognized for this collaborative effort that she and the Reiche Staff have formed with PSO. We thank her for all of her efforts!”  Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk said at the school board’s April 28 meeting.

At the same meeting, the school board also recognized and congratulated Nancy McAdam, the district’s food service manager for the middle and high schools. McAdam won the Manager of the Year Award from the Maine School Nutrition Association.  The award is considered the highest honor a school nutrition manager can earn, and recognizes a cafeteria manager who has demonstrated dedication and ingenuity to improve his or her school meal programs.

She will be honored at a banquet during the Annual MSNA Conference to be held in August in Bangor.

“We are proud to recognize Nancy tonight for this accomplishment,” Caulk said. “The Portland Public Schools is fortunate to have such a dedicated, caring individual to implement projects and support initiatives that ensure students have access to healthy meals.”
