Mohamed Nur, a senior at Deering High School, recently received a 2015 Principal's Award.

The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement and citizenship.

Mohamed and two other Portland Public Schools’ 2015 Principal’s Award winners, Casco Bay High School senior Kim Henry and Portland High School senior Gabriel Walker, received their awards at an Honors Luncheon in Bangor on April 11.

“Mohamed Nur will graduate Deering High School with more leadership skills and experiences than many adults surrounding him,” according to DHS Principal Ira Waltz. “When he came to us freshman year, we instantly knew we had someone special in our community.”

Not only has Mohamed led his class as co-president all four years, he currently is head of the President’s Council. He served as the school’s student representative on the Portland Board of Public Education and also earned the privilege of interning for U.S. Senator Angus King.

He is a National Honor Society member who holds leadership positions with Seeds of Peace, Unity Project and Kindred Spirits.

“Mohamed is an innovative thinker who is not afraid to step up and take action. When our school did not have an active Model UN program, he took the initiative to establish our chapter and currently serves as president,” Waltz said.

His awards include the Varsity Academic Letter, the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, the St. Michael’s Book Award for Academic Excellence and Social Awareness and both the Seeds of Peace Diplomacy and Distinguished Delegate Awards.

Mohamed ended up with a choice of three colleges at which to study: Bowdoin College, Dartmouth College and Georgetown University.

“Look for him to be a leader in world politics and peacekeeping,” Waltz said.

The Principal's Award is presented in Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine's school administrators.
