The Portland Board of Public Education and Portland Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk in May honored Deering High School senior Stephen Ochan, who was named the Gatorade Maine Boys Soccer Player of the Year earlier in this year.

Superintendent Caulk, speaking at the board’s May 5 meeting, said, “We congratulate Stephen for receiving this prestigious award, and thank him for representing our district.  We wish him well on his road to success!”

Gatorade, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, honors the nation’s best high school athletes each year.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Ochan as Maine’s best high school boys’ soccer player.

As a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced this month, Stephen is the first Gatorade Maine Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Deering High School.

Stephen, a senior midfielder for Deering scored six goals and passed for six assists this past season, leading the Rams (13-2-1) to the Western Class A semifinals. An All-American selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Ochan was also named Southwestern Maine Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year and Western Maine Board of Soccer Officials Player of the Year.

In addition to his accomplishments on the field, he has maintained a B-plus average in the classroom. President of his senior class, he has volunteered locally on behalf of a soup kitchen and youth soccer programs.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.
