Reiche Teacher To Present at National Symposium
Posted on 05/05/2015

Joan Murray, a fifth-grade teacher at Reiche Community School, will participate in a symposium on closing achievement gaps in Washington, D.C. on May 11.

Her invitation to participate stems from another presentation Murray and Reiche teacher leader Lori Bobinsky and grade 3 teacher Selene Becker made at the NEA Leadership Summit in Anaheim, Calif. in February. That presentation came about after John Wright, former director of priority schools at the NEA, invited Reiche to submit a proposal about being a teacher-led school. Their proposal was accepted and the teachers spoke at the summit.

Because of that presentation, Murray has now been invited to present at the upcoming symposium about closing the achievement gap.

The symposium is titled, “Closing the Gaps: A Policy & Practice Conversation to Advance an Opportunity Agenda.” It will focus on how to close achievement gaps for students from ethnic and racial minority groups, English language learners, students with disabilities and low-income students. Leading practitioners will highlight successes in specific interventions and gap-closing strategies; policy experts will talk about ways to support and scale up proven practices through “policy levers;” and leading thinkers will assess the progress made and what more needs to be done to close achievement gaps and improve educational outcomes.
