The Deering High School Debate Team emerged with the top score in a debate tournament Nov. 14.

“Overall, our team won more points for debate wins than any of 22 competing high schools. This means we took home the first place Debate Sweepstakes trophy,” said math teacher Brian Dodge, the school’s Debate Club advisor/coach.

Dodge provided the following accounting of the team’s accomplishments:

The team competed at the fourth of eight regular season debate tournaments held across the state. The Nov. 14 event was the all-day "Holiday Food Drive Tournament" at Maranacook Community High School in Readfield.

There are four main categories of forensics events: Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum, Congress, and Speech. The team competed primarily in the "Debate" category, which is Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum.

Lincoln Douglas is a one-on-one values-based style of debate. The Lincoln Douglas topic was:  “In the United States criminal justice system, jury nullification ought to be used in the face of perceived injustice.” Public forum is a two-on-two more contemporary and evidence-based style. The Public-Forum topic was: “In response to the current crisis, a government should prioritize the humanitarian needs of refugees over its national interests.”

The tournament consisted of three preliminary rounds, followed by a semi-final round, and then a final round. Each round was roughly 45 minutes long.

The Deering competitors at the event were:
Chris Sheehy - Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas (semi-finalist)
Jouya Mahmoudi - Novice Public Forum
Spencer Todd - Novice Public Forum
Alex Smith - Varsity Lincoln Douglas (finished first)
Dylantha Musonerwa - Novice Lincoln Douglas
Zaeda Hills-Blotner - Varsity Lincoln Douglas
Arija Forsythe - Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas (finished first)
Sahra Ahmed - Junior Varsity Lincoln Douglas
