Peaks Island Elementary School students in teacher Charlie Marenghi's class hosted a Scary Café on Oct. 29. The event functioned both as a fundraiser and a persuasive writing exercise for students.

The Scary Café was the focus of Lucy Calkin's persuasive writing unit for grades 3 and 4, in which the students appealed to the school’s teacher leader, Renee Bourgoine-Serio, by writing opinion pieces explaining why the café would be a valuable learning opportunity.

After Bourgoine-Serio approved their idea, Marenghi taught the children how to use additional persuasive writing components to convince each other of the best charity to receive the proceeds from the café, which sold treats made by students and their families to community members and students from other classes.

Marenghi's class decided that the money raised would be donated to help with the renovation of the Peaks Island Library. Through the generosity of the Peaks Island community, the Scary Café raised a total of $235.27.
