The Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center will hold a Language, Culture and Identity Conference on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Abromson Center on the University of Southern Maine’s Portland campus. The conference is designed for educators, administrators, service providers and other individuals interested in the language acquisition, academic achievement, and sociocultural and emotional well-being of English language learners.

The 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. conference features a keynote speaker, Catherine Collier, who is a nationally recognized expert on diverse learners with learning and behavior needs. Her address is titled “Seven Steps for Separating Difference and Disability,” and addresses the topic of acculturation considerations for assessment and instruction.

There will be three strands of concurrent workshop sessions, including a follow-up session with Collier and several sessions devoted to the theme of the keynote. Workshops include “Multicultural Perspectives on Special Education”; “Weaving Global Competence into Your Current Practice”; and “Cross-Cultural Math Histories.” Teachers and service providers of English language learners can follow a strand or mix and match according to interest.

The Portland Public Schools is Maine's largest and most diverse school district, serving approximately 7,000 students. More than 2,300 of those students – about 30 percent of the district's total enrollment – come from homes where a primary language other than English is spoken. A total of about 60 different languages are represented. More than 1,700 of these students are identified as English language learners.

Conference Registration:

Advance registration (before October 16, 2015): $125

Portland Public Schools staff: $80

Full-time students: $80
