Barring any further school cancellations, the Portland Board of Public Education has approved Friday, June 17, as the final full day of school for students this school year. The board also set Monday, June 20, and Tuesday, June 21, as the last workdays for teachers and educational technicians.

The board’s vote to amend the 2015-2016 district calendar to reflect those changes came at its business meeting on April 26. The calendar originally set the last day of school for students as June 15 and for teachers as June 16. However, the district had three snow days this school year, when school was cancelled.

The last day of school for students in June is typically a half day, but Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker told the board that it would be more valuable to have students attend their last day of school on Friday, June 17, and have it be a full day. Then, she said, Monday and Tuesday, June 20 and June 21, will be full staff days, with one of those days used for professional development.

The amendments to the calendar now give students 177 instructional days. That is two days more than the state mandated number of 175, Crocker noted.
