It’s about to be “fashion week” at the Portland Public Schools! It’s the time of year when the Fashion Marketing Program at the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) puts on its annual fashion show. The “Collection 2016 Fashion Show” will feature original designs, redesign of existing dresses, and a presentation of garments by PATHS fashion alumni.

This year’s show will be on Tuesday, April 12, at the Portland Public Library’s Rines Auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets, available at the door, are $5. There will be complimentary refreshments and a silent auction.

This year marks the 25th annual fashion show by PATHS’ Fashion Marketing Program. Instructor Jane Krasnow said the yearly show is “a culminating event for the students in this program.” Each show features unique student lines. This year, Krasnow said, “we have two senior collections. One is splashy and formal and the other is very casual. It’s eclectic this year, with lots of first-time sewers and designers. Some garments are very wearable, others are wearable art.“

Proceeds will benefit student scholarships as well as helping “Facing Maine,” a community organization that helps families and children that are dealing with cleft lip and palate.

Also, PATHS students have been partnering with Cape Elizabeth High School’s “Cape Closet.” Cape Closet collects donated prom gowns and gives the gowns free to students who need them. Portland’s public high school students benefit from Cape Closet. PATHS fashion students have been redesigning and updating the gowns to demonstrate how easy it is to make a slightly out-of-date prom gown into a current style with just a few changes. The students have really enjoyed this community service project and will present a selection of these gowns at the show.

Special guest commentator will be Erin Ovalle, formerly a morning anchor for WMTW-TV. She now is the co-owner of “Style Me Portland” in the Old Port, a dress boutique and beauty bar. She also is the host of a new lifestyle show on WGME Channel 13, called “#Maine Life.”
