LearningWorks Afterschool (LWAS) is about to start for the 2016-2017 school year. The STEM-based afterschool program for students in grades 2-5 at six elementary schools in Portland – Reiche, East End Community School, Ocean Avenue, Presumpscot, Hall, and Riverton – begins Sept. 14.

The program is designed to give students additional academic learning experiences in literacy, science, technology, engineering and math in a fun, project-based setting.

Students will be engaged in hands-on learning that will expand their background knowledge, vocabulary, teamwork, communication, and analytical thinking skills. Students will also be engaged in physical fitness, health, and arts/cultural activities. Field trips and guest speakers are a key part of the program. This afterschool program is provided by LearningWorks, in partnership with Portland Schools, and is funded by 21st Century Community Learning Center grants.
