Friends of Portland Adult Education (FPAE) has received a $9,900 grant from the Rines/Thompson Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to support scholarships and credential evaluations for students at Portland Adult Education (PAE).

“Enrolling in specific skill-building courses or receiving credit for prior educational experience can significantly reduce the time on public assistance before a student gains meaningful employment,” said Sarah Robinson, FPAE Coordinator. “This grant is so important for students at PAE in programs such as the New Mainers Resource Center and the Street Academy for Homeless Youth.”

Portland Adult Education began offering civic courses in 1858 at the Preble Street Chapel. In 2015-2016, PAE served more than 4,000 adult students, including more than 1,700 immigrants from approximately 70 countries.

“A joint report by the New American Economy, the Migration Policy Institute, and World Education Services released Dec. 7 estimates that the under-utilization of highly educated immigrant professionals is a brain waste that costs the U.S. billions of dollars in lost earning and taxes,” said Anja Hanson, PAE Academic Advisor. “In greater Portland, both new Mainers and homeless youth struggle to launch into work that fulfills their potential. This grant accelerates the opportunity for PAE students to discover education and employment that fit their skills.”
