Peaks Island Elementary School on Thursday, Feb. 25, will hold a daylong celebration of literacy featuring three award-winning authors who also are island residents: Jamie Hogan, Anne Sibley-O'Brien, and Scott Nash.

The authors will visit the school to read aloud to students from their work and talk about the writing process. In the evening, the whole community will be invited to come and learn about the authors and their work.

Hogan is an illustrator of many award-winning children’s books and also is the author and illustrator of “The Seven Days of Daisy.” O’Brien also is an author and illustrator. Her latest title is “I'm New Here,” a picture book she wrote and illustrated about three immigrant children and their experience being new in elementary school. Nash is another author and illustrator whose numerous books include the popular “Flat Stanley.”

The authors will visit classrooms between 12:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, on a 40-minute, class-rotation basis.

All of the authors will bring their most recently published works – and in Nash’s case, a sneak preview of a book to be published this spring, said Renee Bourgoine-Serio, the island school’s teacher leader.  She said teachers also have asked that authors read aloud from one of their books, answer student questions and do a related activity, such as a quick sketch of an illustration and/or discuss the writing process.

At 5 p.m., Barbara Hoppin, an island resident and former principal of the Peaks Island school, will host a dinner for the guest authors as well as the school’s teachers and other staff.

Then, from 6:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. that evening, the school will be open to the whole community, including parents and children, so all can learn about the authors' work and writing process.  There will be an opportunity to purchase autographed books at the evening event as well.
