 | EECS Invites Students to Join in ‘Winter Walk to School Day’ Posted on 02/01/2016 East End Community School’s Walking School Bus program is celebrating “Winter Walk to School Day” on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Sports mascots “Crusher” and “Slugger” will accompany students on their walks. Current walkers in the program and new students are encouraged to participate to on this special day.

 | Lyseth Students Celebrate Their Learning at End of Literacy Project Posted on 01/22/2016 Students at Lyseth Elementary School held a celebration of learning this week. Fifth-graders in teacher Debra Fenton’s class have mentored students in teacher Linda Whittum’s second-grade class since the start of the school year. The fifth-graders wrote and illustrated children’s books for the younger students – and shared the results of their work on Jan. 21, at an event attended by parents and school officials.

 | Bowdoin Students To Use Winter Break to Mentor Moore Students Posted on 01/14/2016 Instead of relaxing on a tropical beach, 10 Bowdoin College education students will spend their winter break at Lyman Moore Middle School Jan. 19-22. During their “Alternative Winter Break,” they’ll mentor the younger students and give them a sense of what it’s like to be a college student. They’ll also assist teachers in the classroom.

Posted on 01/11/2016 Portland Public Schools students will be an integral part of the events this coming weekend to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Friday, Jan. 15, King Middle School students will perform in the annual MLK Music and Gospel Concert at Merrill Auditorium. On Saturday, Jan. 16, high school students are invited to a Youth Summit titled “I Am My Brother's and Sister's Keeper,” to be held at the University of Southern Maine.

| Consultant To Aid School Board in Superintendent Search Posted on 01/06/2016 At its Jan. 5 meeting, the Portland Board of Public Education voted to hire BWP & Associates, an educational leadership search firm, to assist the board in its search for a new superintendent of the Portland Public Schools. The board hopes to have a new hire in place by July 1 of this year to lead Maine's largest and most diverse school system.
