Consultant To Aid School Board in Superintendent Search
Posted on 01/06/2016

At its Jan. 5 meeting, the Portland Board of Public Education voted to hire BWP & Associates, an educational leadership search firm, to assist the board in its search for a new superintendent of the Portland Public Schools. The board hopes to have a new hire in place by July 1 of this year to lead Maine's largest and most diverse school system.

The board voted to authorize board Chair Marnie Morrione to sign a letter of understanding with the Illinois-based consulting firm and also authorized spending up to $25,000 to cover the costs of consulting fees and additional expenses. Both votes were unanimous.

“This is really exciting,” said Morrione, who also is co-chair of the board’s Superintendent Search Committee. “We’ve now decided on a firm and we’re moving on to our next phase … of working with this firm.”

She said the committee will meet next on Jan. 13 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the district’s Central Office building at 353 Cumberland Avenue. The focus of that meeting is to “start our planning meeting with this firm.” Morrione also said the committee will be looking at ways to ensure that the community, staff and other board members are included in the search process along the way.

At-large school board member Anna Trevorrow, the other co-chair of the Superintendent Search Committee, said that after doing interviews of search firms in November, the board selected BWP as its first choice.

Former Portland Public Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk left last summer to take a superintendent post in Kentucky. The school board chose to have an interim superintendent for one year to give it time to conduct a comprehensive national search for a new superintendent. Interim Portland Superintendent Jeanne Crocker, formerly the district’s director of school management, was hired Aug. 1 to fill that one-year post in the meantime. She plans to retire this summer after her term ends.
