East End Community School’s Walking School Bus program is celebrating “Winter Walk to School Day” on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Sports mascots “Crusher” and “Slugger” will accompany students on their walks. Current walkers in the program and new students are encouraged to participate on this special day.

Families new to the program may contact Program Coordinator Elise Moody-Roberts by email at eecs@walkingschoolbus.me or at (207) 671-9207. They can also visit the program’s website: http://walkingschoolbus.me/portland for more information.

A Walking School Bus is a healthy, cost-effective addition to a school transportation system in which groups of children are accompanied on the walk to school each morning by trained adult volunteers. The program helps ensure students get some physical activity at the beginning of their day and the adult volunteers help make sure that the kids are safe.

EECS is a leader in the state in offering the Walking School Bus program. It operates two Walking School Bus routes daily. The school's Kennedy Park Route starts at the corner of Smith and Oxford streets at 7:50 a.m., and its Munjoy Route starts at 7:40 a.m., where Munjoy Street meets the Eastern Promenade.
