A group of King Middle School seventh-graders this week will be showcasing what they’ve learned about the use of remotely operated vehicles to investigate invasive species.

The Windsor 7 students will present the results of their latest learning expedition at Reiche Community School on Friday, Jan. 15, from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The presentation will be the culminating event of the students’ technologically innovative expedition called R.E.D. (research, engineering and deployment) Rovers, in which students have been investigating invasive plant species in Maine since last fall.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) asked the Windsor 7 students if they'd be willing to help the agency see if and how they could help identify aquatic invasive species in Maine and play a role in remediating their spread. The students eagerly pitched in. They took a field trip to identify invasive species and got help from engineers from the Office of Naval Research at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery in the building and testing of a type of ROV (small, remotely operated submersibles called SeaPerches). The students also learned how to modify their machines to make them capable of photographing invasive plants.

In tandem with this STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) project, the students also explored technology through literature and research in their language arts and social studies courses. They also researched other cases of technology being used to address community issues around the globe.

They’re now ready to present the results of their learning to the public.

King Middle School is a high-achieving, highly diverse public school in the EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) network and at the forefront of national school reform.
