Students at Lyseth Elementary School held a celebration of learning this week. Fifth-graders in teacher Debra Fenton’s class have mentored students in teacher Linda Whittum’s second-grade class since the start of the school year. The fifth-graders wrote and illustrated children’s books for the younger students – and shared the results of their work on Jan. 21, at an event attended by parents and school officials.

The project began with the fifth-graders doing an information piece on a state of their choice, the teachers explained. After learning about the state, they selected an animal that lived in the state they’d chosen. The students used this information, along with additional information obtained after interviewing mentees about their lives. The interview questions helped the fifth-grade students write and illustrate a children’s book for their mentee using their animal as characters.  They also assisted their mentees with some “gingerbread man” activities and helped the second-graders write a story.

The celebration was an opportunity for the fifth-grade students to formally present the stories they wrote and illustrated to their second-grade partners and parents. Every student received a copy of his/her own personal story. “We believe they are a ‘keepsake’ for both groups of children,” the teachers said.

The second-graders shared their finished stories as well, and were very excited to also share their experience of mentoring.
