Presumpscot Elementary School third-graders will give lessons on the life cycle of a lobster when they participate in the Atlantic Cup Kids Day on Thursday, June 9. The students will be presenting their learning from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the Maine Wharf on Commercial Street.

Presenting to an audience of parents, school children, and other visitors, the students will share their tri-folds and the information they learned connected to a lobster’s life cycle in areas such as habitat, anatomy, food chain, the art and science of lobstering, and the effects of climate change on a lobster’s habitat.

Committed to sustainability, the Atlantic Cup is billed as the first carbon neutral sailing race in the United States. The race began in Charleston, S.C. on May 27, with two-person teams on 40-foot sailboats racing 648 nautical miles to New York City. After restarting there, the teams raced 350 nautical miles to Portland.

In each of the three ports of the race, the Atlantic Cup hosts a Kid’s Day to help children learn about waterways and the environmental challenges facing them.

Unique to the Portland stop, Presumpscot students will be one of four stations offering ocean-based education to area schoolchildren. Other stations include presentation on water bottles and ocean pollution and knot tying, and there will be an opportunity to tour one of the race boats.

Presumpscot Elementary School is in the EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) network, and Presumpscot students participate in project-based learning expeditions. Thursday’s presentation of learning is the culminating event in the third-graders’ Lobster Expedition.
