 | PPS Teachers Are Finalists in STEM Challenge Competition Posted on 11/14/2016 Three teachers from Lincoln Middle School and a teacher from Portland High School are finalists in a new competition designed to give K-12 educators the opportunity to try out highly innovative ideas in STEM teaching and learning. The teachers will compete on Friday, Nov. 18, at Colby College to win grants of $2,000 or $5,000 to implement their ideas.

 | Voters Elect Two Incumbents, Political Newcomer to School Board Posted on 11/09/2016 District 3 Portland Board of Public Education member Laurie Davis and at-large member Anna Trevorrow were reelected to their seats on Nov. 8, according to unofficial voting tallies from the Portland City Clerk’s office. Political newcomer Roberto Rodriguez was also elected to an at-large school board seat.

 | DHS Student Wins New England Boxing Title Posted on 11/09/2016 Deering High School senior Gabriel “Tito” Morales, of the Portland Boxing Club, recently won the USA Boxing New England Featherweight Championship with a close, hard-fought unanimous decision win, according to the boxing club.

 | CBHS Principal Wins Award for Exemplary Leadership Posted on 11/09/2016 Derek Pierce, principal of Casco Bay High School (CBHS), recently won the 2016 Silverberg Leadership Award from EL Education. The award is given to an exemplary school leader who has raised student achievement through deep implementation of EL Education practices. The award comes with a $5,000 cash prize.

 | Lunch, Activities Offered for EECS Students Election Day Posted on 11/07/2016 Classes are cancelled Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, at two district schools that are used as polling places: Deering High School and East End Community School (EECS). The high voter turnout that day is expected to be too disruptive to student learning and poses security concerns. However, EECS has partnered with community organizations to offer lunch and activities off site for its students.
