On Monday, Nov. 21, Casco Bay High School (CBHS) seniors will host a public, multimedia museum showcasing their work exploring stories of heroism in the modern Middle East. The event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Mention of the Middle East often brings to mind images of destruction and instability. However, the Middle East is also home to incredible vibrancy and stories of heart.

This fall, CBHS seniors have been studying heroes of the transition from subject to citizen. In a global community, it is crucial to explore perspectives and realities other than our own. The seniors themselves, many of them about to leave home, are transitioning into a position of increased citizenship and are using their work to find role models of how to achieve positive change using non-violent methods, even under the most challenging circumstances.

The museum is comprised of about a hundred non-mimetic portraits presented in multiple media ways – from paintings to performance pieces. There will also be spoken word excerpts from “The Poets and the Assassin” by writer, educator, and Muslim scholar, Reza Jalali, who also is coordinator of the University of Southern Maine’s Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. The play is the story of Iranian women and their century-old battle for rights, which remains largely untold.

Come, explore and find hope within strife.  CBHS students hope that the experience will be one of learning, growth, and inspiration for all.
